Overview

The Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization, now known as Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, is a groundbreaking public-private global health partnership aimed at increasing access to immunization in poor countries. Since its inception, Gavi has supported the immunization of almost half the world's children, helping to immunize over 760 million children and preventing over 13 million deaths worldwide. By negotiating bulk prices, supporting price discrimination, and reducing commercial risks for manufacturers, Gavi has played a pivotal role in improving the economics of vaccines. With a focus on increasing vaccine coverage and reducing child mortality, Gavi has contributed significantly to global health efforts, making it the largest organization distributing donations towards vaccines. As of 2016, more than a third of donor money for immunization was channelled through Gavi, underscoring its importance in the global health landscape. With its efforts, Gavi has helped increase diphtheria vaccine coverage in supported countries from 59% in 2000 to 81% in 2019, contributing to reducing child mortality by half. Gavi's work is a testament to the power of public-private partnerships in addressing global health challenges, and its impact will continue to be felt for generations to come.
