Overview

Vulnerable populations, including the elderly, children, and those with disabilities, are disproportionately affected by social and economic inequalities. According to the United Nations, over 1 billion people worldwide live with some form of disability, with 80% residing in developing countries. The World Health Organization reports that 15% of the global population, approximately 1.1 billion people, experience significant disabilities. Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated existing health disparities, with vulnerable populations facing increased risks of infection, hospitalization, and mortality. For instance, a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that individuals with disabilities are 2.5 times more likely to experience severe illness from COVID-19. The intersectionality of these issues demands a comprehensive approach to address the unique challenges faced by vulnerable populations, including accessible healthcare, education, and economic empowerment. As noted by Dr. Margaret Chan, former Director-General of the World Health Organization, 'the health of vulnerable populations is a reflection of the health of our societies as a whole.'
