With facilities in [[rockville-maryland|Rockville, Maryland]], and [[san-diego-california|San Diego, California]], JCVI employs over 200 people, including [[hamilton-smith|Nobel laureate Hamilton Smith]]. The institute's research focuses on genomic medicine, environmental genomic analysis, clean energy, synthetic biology, and the ethics, law, and economics surrounding genomics. In 2022, JCVI was sold to the [[university-of-california-san-diego|University of California, San Diego]]. As a leading institution in the field of genomics, JCVI has made significant contributions to our understanding of the human genome and its applications in medicine and beyond.
