Immunoregulatory mechanisms are the complex processes by which the immune system maintains a delicate balance between protecting the body against pathogens and preventing excessive or inappropriate immune responses. These mechanisms involve a network of cells, tissues, and molecules that work together to regulate the immune system's response to disease and injury. The immune system's ability to distinguish between self and non-self is crucial to preventing autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis and lupus, which affect millions of people worldwide. According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), autoimmune diseases affect approximately 23.5 million people in the United States alone. Understanding immunoregulatory mechanisms is essential for developing effective treatments for these diseases and for preventing immune-related disorders, such as transplant rejection and allergic reactions. Researchers, including Dr. James Allison and Dr. Tasuku Honjo, who were awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2018 for their discovery of cancer therapy by inhibition of negative immune regulation, have made significant contributions to our understanding of immunoregulatory mechanisms.
