Overview

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing advocacy, education, support, and public awareness for individuals and families affected by mental illness. Founded in 1979 by family members of people diagnosed with mental illness, NAMI has grown to have around 1,000 state and local affiliates across the United States. With its headquarters in Arlington, Virginia, NAMI offers classes, trainings, and events, including Mental Illness Awareness Week and NAMIWalks, to promote education, fundraising, and community engagement. NAMI's mission is to enable all individuals and families affected by mental illness to build better lives, and its vision is a world where people with mental illness can live healthy, fulfilling lives supported by a caring community. As a leading voice in mental health advocacy, NAMI collaborates with organizations like the [[american-psychiatric-association|American Psychiatric Association]] and the [[national-institute-of-mental-health|National Institute of Mental Health]] to advance research, treatment, and support for mental health conditions. With the help of partners like [[ Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration|SAMHSA]], NAMI works to reduce stigma, improve access to care, and promote recovery for individuals affected by mental illness.
