Access, a fundamental concept in modern society, refers to the ability to enter, use, or obtain something. However, the notion of access is multifaceted, encompassing physical, digital, economic, and social dimensions. The widespread adoption of the internet and digital technologies has significantly expanded access to information, education, and economic opportunities, with the global online population reaching 4.9 billion people as of 2022, according to data from the International Telecommunication Union. Nevertheless, issues of unequal access persist, with 37% of the world's population, or approximately 2.9 billion people, lacking internet access, as reported by the ITU. The digital divide is further exacerbated by socioeconomic factors, with marginalized communities often facing significant barriers to access. As technology continues to evolve, it is crucial to address these disparities and ensure that access is equitable, secure, and beneficial for all, a challenge that will require concerted efforts from policymakers, technologists, and social advocates, with the World Bank estimating that achieving universal internet access by 2030 will require investments of over $100 billion.
